Meet Eve who is studying at University of Glasgow

What appeals to you about Electronics?

At university, a rivalry exists between engineering disciplines. However, when engineers have a problem to solve, we don’t typically look to the sky or the soil for an answer. More often than not, we look to a search engine on a smartphone or computer screen: in other words, electronics. When choosing a degree, all I really knew was that I wanted to pursue a subject that would challenge me, and teach me how to problem solve, which would have come in handy when all my experiments in Physics went awry. In my early school years, engineering was marketed just like Yorkie bars: not for girls. I ate a lot of Yorkie bars growing up.

What type work have you been involved with during your placement?

Over the course of two placements at Leonardo, I have participated in the analysis, design and test of antennas, which has provided me the opportunity to learn from experienced engineers, including those in Leonardo’s Compact Antenna Test Range. This has cemented my passion for RF engineering, which I hope to pursue through a PhD.

What are your interests outside of work?

In my spare time I write short stories, and currently I’m particularly enjoying reading about European history and the Romanov dynasty. I am also interested in space technology, having been a participant in the Learning Journey to Houston as part of Strathclyde Space School. This was incredibly valuable to me for the purposes of induction day ice breakers: saying I’ve ceilidh danced with an astronaut always gets conversation started.
